Québec’s feminist strike
Half a million public sector workers, including 80,000 nurses, are on strike in Québec. On December 14, nurse Natalie Stake-Doucet joined Canadian Health Coalition’s Anne Lagacé Dowson for a conversation about what has been dubbed Québec’s feminist strike.
Natalie Stake-Doucet is a nurse, assistant professor at l’Université de Montreal and board member of the Québec Nurses Association. During the webinar, Stake-Doucet described the demands of Québec’s Common Front, including better pay for women employed in public services.
Stake-Doucet noted Premier François Legault drew denunciations when he tweeted in 2022 that women attach less importance to salaries than men.
The average salary of a public sector worker in the Common Front is $43,916. Seventy-eight per cent of these workers are women.
