Webinar: What are real solutions to Canada’s toxic drug crisis?
Canada is experiencing a toxic drug crisis that is claiming a record-breaking number of lives in some provinces. There are many kinds of solutions on the table to avoid one more drug poisoning death but some are more effective and humane than others.
On November 4, the Canadian Health Coalition’s Anne Lagacé Dowson will host a conversation on what we can do about drug poisoning with experts, advocates and harm reduction practitioners.

DJ Larkin is the executive director of the Canadian Drug Policy Coalition. They are a lawyer and legal advocate who has worked on issues impacting people experiencing criminalization and systemic marginalization for over a decade. DJ has worked to centre the voices of people who use drugs through support for peer-led groups in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
Chris Gallaway is the executive director of the Alberta-based Friends of Medicare. His past experience includes working for the Alberta Federation of Labour, in three provincial legislative assemblies, and for a variety of non-profit and community organizations. Outside of work Chris is an active volunteer and community member engaged in social justice and the arts.
Valerya Edelman is an assistant professor at St. Thomas University’s School of Social Work. She has worked in mental health and addictions since 1998, including in Vancouver’s downtown eastside. In 2014, she moved from Vancouver on Coast Salish Territory to Fredericton on Wolastoqiyik Territory, where she helped build and managed Clinic 554 – a health care facility specialized in harm reduction, trans, queer, and reproductive care.
