What’s the latest on the new dental care plan?
There are many questions about the Canadian Dental Care Plan as it rolls out. To get answers to these questions, the Canadian Health Coalition hosted a webinar on the Canadian Dental Care Plan on April 9, 2024 that is now available for viewing here –
Guests Brandon Doucet, a dental surgeon and founder of the Coalition for Dentalcare and author of About Canada: Dental Care (Fernwood), and Don Davies, NDP MP for Vancouver Kingsway, joined host Anne Lagacé Dowson, of the Canadian Health Coalition.
Don Davies, MP (Vancouver Kingsway) says the NDP is asking that seniors be given a one-time option to withdraw from their current plan and opt in to the Canadian Dental Care Plan, which is a much better plan in many ways.
Until last week, Davies was the NDP Health Critic and is now the Finance Critic. Peter Julian, MP for New Westminster-Burnaby, is now the NDP Health Critic.
Doucet spoke about the many benefits of the dental care plan but is worried about the dentists in the media who are evoking fear over the plan.
“I think it’s very irresponsible,” said Doucet, citing how children’s oral health in Saskatchewan suffered when dentists got rid of a program that gave oral care for children. He wants dentists to care about low-income Canadians.
